Vodafone has begun offering the iPhone in the UK today. This now brings to four (if you include Tesco which is basically part of O2) the number of networks carrying Apple's smart phone.
In a break from the norm, the main area of competition will be on data plans rather than bundled calls and texts. Vodafone offers 1GB of data per month, compared to O2's unlimited (subject to its excessive use policy) package and Orange's relatively small 750MB.
Vodafone has also invested in its 3G network in an effort to avoid the capacity issues suffered by O2. Its overall coverage is however less than the others.
With the advent of other smart phones such as the Google Nexus One, networks are likely to come under significant strain this year. Those that can cope and offer a good customer experience will find themselves with lots of happy customers - just so long as they keep investing in their network!
